Greenland Muskox Expedition — Greenland

Hunting this ground with Huntica

Greenland is where Rasmus Høj Jakobsen's family story begins. His father and grandparents lived as expats in Greenland in the 1970s, immersed in the Inuit culture of living off and in tune with the land. That heritage runs through every Huntica expedition here.

The landscape is unlike anything else on earth — vast Arctic tundra stretching to the ice cap, carved by glacial rivers, and inhabited by herds of muskox that have survived here for thousands of years. This is frontier hunting. No fences, no roads beyond the first few kilometres, and a silence so deep it changes the way you think.

Hunting muskox in Greenland is as much about the place as the animal. The tundra is humbling. The scale is immense. The experience stays with you.

Species and seasons

  • Muskox — the primary target. Ice Age survivors with thick coats and curved horns. Bulls can weigh up to 400 kg. Hunting them on open tundra is a profound experience.
  • Arctic Hare — white-furred hares found across the tundra; available as an add-on species.
  • Ptarmigan — Arctic grouse; wing shooting over the tundra between muskox stalks.

The season runs August through October, with September offering the best conditions — stable weather, active herds, and the tundra turning gold before winter arrives.

How we host you here

Rasmus personally hosts all Greenland expeditions. His family connection to this landscape and his understanding of Arctic conditions make him the natural lead host for this destination.

Groups are kept small — 2 to 6 hunters — because the terrain and logistics demand it and because the intimacy of a small expedition in this landscape is part of what makes it extraordinary. Local Greenlandic guides with deep knowledge of the terrain, weather, and animal behaviour work alongside Rasmus throughout.

Trip design follows the same "by the hour" standard: hunting blocks, rest, meals, and evening time are planned around conditions and group energy, not left to chance.

Why this is Huntica Approved Ground

Rasmus's personal connection to Greenland runs through his family. Huntica's founders have hunted this ground and vetted the local outfitters, guides, and logistics chain.

  • Founders have hunted it: Rasmus has personal and family experience in Greenland's wilderness.
  • Ethical game management: Muskox quotas are set by the Government of Greenland based on scientific population surveys; hunting is carefully managed and sustainable.
  • Guide standards: Local Greenlandic guides with deep knowledge of the terrain, weather, and animal behaviour.
  • Logistics: Remote terrain requires careful planning — Huntica coordinates all flights, transfers, and camp logistics.
  • Unique experience: There is nowhere else on earth that offers this combination of species and landscape.

Practical details

  • Travel: International flights to Copenhagen (CPH), then domestic connection to Kangerlussuaq (SFJ). Transfer from Kangerlussuaq to hunting area: 0–4 hours by vehicle or boat depending on specific area.
  • Accommodation: Comfortable lodges in Kangerlussuaq or tented camps on the tundra. Both options are part of the experience — the camps bring you closer to the ground.
  • Weather: September temperatures range from -5°C to 10°C. Conditions can change rapidly. Wind, rain, and early snow are possible. Huntica provides a detailed gear list.
  • Terrain: Open Arctic tundra with rolling hills, glacial moraines, river crossings, and boulder fields. Vegetation is low — moss, lichen, and Arctic grass. Visibility is excellent.
  • Hunting method: Spot and stalk. Glass from high ground, locate a herd, plan approach using terrain for cover, close on foot. Wind discipline and patience are essential.
  • Physical demands: Moderate to high. Expect 10–20 km walking per day over uneven terrain. Reasonable fitness required.
  • Logistics handled by Huntica: All flights from Copenhagen, ground transfers, camp logistics, firearms import permits, trophy handling, and export documentation.
